Project Description
Queensland Nickel (QN) operate the Yabulu Nickel Refinery, located on a 2,464
ha land holding on the north Queensland tropical coast adjacent to Halifax Bay,
approximately 30 km north-west of Townsville. In June 1997, Lloyd
Consulting was engaged by QNI to implement and manage a detailed Environmental
Assessment and Management (EA&M) program for the site as a corporate best
practice initiative for the Yabulu Refinery. To date, the programme outcomes
implemented by Lloyd Consulting have allowed BHPBY to develop and
prioritise appropriate management measures for the refinery operations to
ensure the environmental impacts of the refinery are minimised.
Services Provided
Lloyd Consulting has worked closely with Alistair Melzer on the ecological
assessment aspects of this long-term project since 1998.
This
included:
- baseline vegetation survey
and mapping;
- fire management strategy
and associated GIS;
- preparation of field
herbarium;
- baseline fauna survey;
- periodic flora and fauna
audits;
- development and implementation of a terrestrial and aquatic and
estuarine monitoring program.
